MFL—Modern Foreign Languages

In Key Stage 2, children are taught French enabling them to make substantial progress in one language. MFL is delivered weekly, in dedicated language lessons, however children are also encouraged to use their language skills in other areas of the curriculum. Lessons are practical, fun and interactive with a balance of spoken and written language being taught. Children are encouraged to communicate ideas and feelings in speech and in writing using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. The focus of study is on practical communication.

The high-quality teaching of MFL, enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers. It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, and learn new ways of thinking.

“In their sustained quest to improve, school leaders work in teams to evaluate and develop specific areas of the curriculum, for example introducing the teaching of Modern foreign languages.”
