Year 5 Football Tournament
St Wilfrid’s go close at the Wigan Atheltic Y5 Football Tournament!
On Monday 30th April 2018, nine of our Year 5 children competed at the Wigan Athletic U10s football competition held at the DW Stadium, home of Wigan Athletic. The team was made up of Jay Jay, Leo, Christopher, Finlay, Liam, Alex, Henry, Jayden and team captain Freddie. The competition consisted of 36 schools from across the Wigan Borough.
They competed at first in a group stage format, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout stages. The team worked incredibly hard and showed fantastic teamwork by finishing the group stage in 2nd position after three excellent wins against Hindsford, Golborne and Sacred Heart. In the other two games, the team achieved a very tough draw against St Aiden’s and lost to Hindley CP. By finishing 2nd in the group, it meant that the team had successfully qualified for the Last 16 where they would face Leigh Sacred Heart.
In an edgy game to begin with, the team eventually found the breakthrough against a tough, physical team and won the game 2-0. The quarter finals was a local derby as the team faced Woodfold. In again another closely fought match, the team were able to come out on top with a fantastic 3-0 win to secure a place in the semi-final.
The semi-final was contested closely between St Wilfrid’s and Nicol Mere. In the end it was Nicol Mere who just got the edge over the team, and secured a 2-1 victory to book their place in the final. With no 3rd place playoff to be played, St Wilfrid’s were declared tied 3rd place with RL Hughes, who had lost out to Hindley St Peter’s in the other semi-final.
It was a magnificent achievement all-round to finish in 3rd place out of 36 other schools from across the borough and also to pick up a bronze medal for all the teams hard work. The children represented the school with incredible respect and responsibility and were a credit to the school.
